October 12, 2018 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

It's hard to believe October is almost halfway over already!  We were disappointed that we didn’t get to go to the zoo this week but are looking forward to going this coming Thursday, October 18th… hopefully on a really sunny day!  More information will go home the day before but students will need a disposable lunch and drink.

The students drew, painted, and cut out zoo animals this week.  They are beautifully displayed in our hallway.  The children have also been working on their individual innovations of Mom and I went to the Zoo.  They are working very hard on their illustrations, which are looking more and more like the animals they want them to be.

We have started learning about the seven continents, specifically looking at the zoo animals we will see next week that are from each of the continents.  The students have enjoyed sharing what they know about the animals and learning new facts.  They have been working on a Zoo Animals from Around the World book.  We focus on a different continent each day and the students draw a picture of an animal and write a fact about it.  They are doing very well!

We are doing a short unit on teddy bears and will be learning a song and poem about teddy bears next week.  We read a story called “Ira Sleeps Over” and have been talking about our own teddy bears, stuffed animals, and special blankets.  The students got to make costumes for the bears they painted and cut out this week.  They are super cute and very creative!

We started our second topic in math.  We have been comparing numbers 0-5.  They are getting more comfortable with the number formations.  I will continue sending homework home during the next couple of weeks so they can continue practicing them.  These should be completed at home and sent back the next day.  We will be sending them home on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Two Burlington Police Officers visited our school today to talk about bus safety with students.  We learned some important safety tips and even practiced exiting a bus from the back door.  The students were great listeners and seemed to enjoy jumping off the back of the bus!

Our school will be having a Veterans Day Assembly (the day and time haven’t been announced).  If you or another family member are a veteran and are interested in coming to the assembly to either speak or just be present, please let me know.  We would love for you to be there!

Please consider practicing shoe tying and coat zipping at home.  It will save a considerable amount of time in the classroom…especially getting ready for recess!  Also, don’t forget to label water bottles, lunch boxes, coats, sweatshirts, and other clothes items.  We have been doing a lot of detective work trying to figure out what belongs to who!  Thanks!

Have a great weekend!
