June 7, 2019 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

We have had a busy first week of June!  It’s hard to believe there are only 8 1/2 days left!  The students are still working on their narratives.  They have all finished illustrating their published books and have started new stories.  I will post their published books on their Seesaw accounts next week.

We finished all of the Kindergarten math lessons that are apart of our curriculum.  The students are very excited because I told them that I will be teaching a few first grade lessons to get them ready for next year.  A paper will go home next week that explains the ten “Step Up” lessons that we will be working on.  It will give you a nice peek at what the lessons may look like next year.  If they are ever incomplete when they go home, feel free to finish them with your child but it is optional and they do not need to be returned.

We did a short unit on how plants and animals change their environment.  The students wrote about different examples.  A few examples include:  Animals dig holes in the ground to live in.  Termites build mounds/hills to live in.  Plant roots break concrete side walks as they grow.  Beavers cut down trees to make their homes.

The students worked more on our 3D map of Boston and finished it up today!  They have been adding buildings and street signs and even swan boats, play structures, street lamps, a merry-go-round, and the gold dome on the State House!  They have enjoyed being creative and did a great job!  It was fun to make a map of the area in Boston that we visited this week.  It certainly was a fun trip!

We did a special science/engineering project this week.  We talked about what we can do to stay cool on a hot day and then students designed and built shade structures to try to protect a popsicle from melting in the sun.  They worked in small groups to build.  We tested out the structures today and found that all four groups were successful!  Their popsicles melted much less than the popsicle that was left out in the sun!

Miss Amanda visited our school this week to talk about the summer reading program at the Burlington Public Library.  A bookmark went home earlier this week with more details.

We will be going to our school library to borrow books for the last time this Wednesday, June 12.  Please be sure to look for and return your child’s library book.  We will also be visiting the library for the final time on Wednesday, June 19.  Our school librarian said she will allow students to borrow a library book over the summer (if parents agree) and feel like they would like to have a book for summer reading.  I know some parents don’t want their child to borrow a book over the summer.  If you would like your child to borrow a book to keep over the summer and return it in the fall, please let me know.  Otherwise, I will not let them take one home.

The students will be participating in a Cleaning Day this Thursday, June 13th.  Thank you in advance to the parents who have volunteered to help!

We will be walking to Simonds Park on Tuesday, June 18th.  We will be leaving school around 9:30am (weather permitting) to walk to the park.  Crossing guards will be with us along the way to safely cross us at strategic points.  Parents are welcome to join us at the park or walk with us.  Children who attend the After School Program will take a bus back to school.  If you plan on taking your child home from the park, it is very important that you tell us you are taking your child.  NO BACKPACKS are needed that day.  Students should wear sneakers and sunscreen.  Students will NOT be going in the pool.  Please send the signed form back in as soon as possible and send $3 with the form if your child would like to buy pizza for lunch.  Otherwise, he/she will need to bring a bagged lunch and drink.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Melanie Duncan
